Prior to his appointment to the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD on July 6, 2017, Judge Bonifant served as a Family Magistrate for the Court starting in 2013. In private practice for more than 30 years, including nearly 20 as a partner in the Gaithersburg law firm of Debelius, Clifford, Debelius, Crawford & Bonifant, Judge Bonifant handled a wide range of legal matters. His practice included complex family cases, workmen’s compensation matters, caveat proceedings, cases involving commercial transactions and serious traffic matters. Other legal work involved providing advice on estate planning, probate, eminent domain and real estate matters. Judge Bonifant assisted many clients with business transactions.
His clients came from all walks of life, from an unemployed mother of three, whose case went to the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland, to a United States congressman. Clients included school teachers, police officers, first responders, lawyers, doctors, federal government employees, corporate executives, and small business owners. Often, he represented children in custody matters as a Best Interest Attorney.
Judge Bonifant and his wife, a speech pathologist with the County School System for 37 years, have been life-long residents of Montgomery County. Judge Bonifant attended public schools in the County, graduated from Good Counsel High School, and the University of Virginia with distinction. He then graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1982.
A frequent lecturer at continuing legal education programs, Judge Bonifant has been a speaker at many schools as part of the County Bar Association’s Speak Up/Save a Life series, which is designed to educate students and parents on the heroin epidemic. With a strong commitment to maintaining our Community’s health needs, Judge Bonifant has served as a Member of the Board of Directors at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center since 2012. From 1996 to 2006, Judge Bonifant was a member of the Board of Directors of Montgomery General Hospital, acting as its chairperson from 2003 to 2005.
